Fantastic Bag. So so so so much to love about it.

I have different photo backpacks for different purposes. My most used bag until now was the erstwhile tamrac expedition 5. Its the bag I bring to on location photo shoots. I typically need to pack two dslr bodies (5Dii and 5diii) along with the 70-200 lens and the 24-105 as well as the usual assortment of small accessories (cf cards, batteries, business cards, etc etc. This all fit okay, but not great and usually I wanted to bring a speedlite or another niche lens and other larger accessories. I had been holding off purchasing a new bigger bag because I was trying to be less self indulgent. It worked for a couple of years but finally I couldn''t take it anymore and I began shopping for a bag that would give me greater flexibility when I was shooting away from the studio.

I looked at all the usual bag makers and some lesser known as well. I was reluctant to purchase this one because it is so new. I hemmed and hawed over it, making myself nuts. The only review when I was purchasing it had given it three stars. I finally decided that amazon''s amazing return possible was a good enough reason to buy the bag, test it out and see if I wanted to keep it.

Okay, enough with my preamble.... this bag is OUTSTANDING. So incredibly well designed and meticulously crafted. The engineers at Tamrac have achieved an incredible balance between lightness and durability. This bag is so lightweight that when I fill it with gear I don''t feel like I am breaking my back. Now, instead of just the two bodies and two lenses, I typically have three or four lenses and a speedlite or two along with accessories. And there is still room for more.

As with any camera bag you are going to have to get creative with the dividers and the placement of your equipment. One of the things that was important to me with this purchase was the ability to stand lenses up between the dividers. My old bag was too short front to back to have them standing up. This bag handles the 24-105 standing perfectly. I do not have a grip on either of my cameras so the depth of this bag is a bit much for the cameras but I don''t at all have the sense that they aren''t seated securely. It''s a matter of getting dividers and elastic velcro straps positioned creatively. When I have the 70-200 on the 5Diii, there is a fair amount of wiggle room down the middle of the bag. But between the velcro straps and the dividers, keeping the camera and lens in place is really not an issue. Seriously I can''t imagine anyone with any combination of DSLR and lenses not being able to use this bag and use it well. It''s just that good.

My laptop is small (surface pro 3) so the nicely padded laptop compartment easily fits it. From Tamrac''s website I read that it fits most 15 inch laptops. The front pockets are great. I like the way they open, and like that there are pockets inside. There are just so many ways to organize the smaller things I bring with me. Inside there are three more plastic pockets for more organization.

The waist belt is intense.... very seriously made and quite comfortable. But I don''t hike with the bag so I don''t usually need a waist belt so I was happy to see that it is removable. It isn''t altogether easy to remove because the velcro that holds it in place fights hard to hang on to it, but I was eventually able to wrestle it free. I seriously doubt if I will ever use it but honestly if you are hiking with this bag that belt is going to be your best friend.

I don''t want to go on and on but suffice it to say that this bag is HUGELY customizable. And if it doesn''t come with everything you need, there are velcro accessories that attach to the outside of the bag. I''m kind of hankering for the water bottle holder although at the moment the bottom front pocket is holding my poland spring bottle. When I need that pocket for my tripod I''ll have to find something else for my water and I might get the tamrac water bottle attachment (which at the moment is sold out everywhere).

Anyway, to conclude, I think this bag is the perfect combination of fantastic features. I can''t really imagine a better bag for my purposes. Well, maybe I would like a few more pockets but I am a bit of a pocket freak. The average photographer is going to be happy with the pockets on this bag.

If you have any questions, please ask. I''ll write back, I promise.

BOTTOM LINE: Great bag. Super LIGHTWEIGHT but DURABLE. Highly customizable. Holds a lot in a relatively small space. Very versatile and a most reasonable price as far as bags go.

I’ve owned several Tamrac camera bags since 1983 and there’s nothing better. Oodles of pockets for everything inside and out. Quality that has lasted over 30 years on many details. Functionality to the max! Comfortable. Everything and more than what anyone could want!

Just make sure when buying on Amazon that you buy either from Tamrac or an authorized dealer of Tamrac (ask Tamrac) or the warranty is not valid. There are many small companies that sell this on Amazon who are not authorized dealers and therefore the warranty is void. This is a common practice for many manufacturers not just Tamrac. Don’t just take the first seller that pops up on Amazon. This is true for anything of a higher value.

I spent a long time deciding between a 23 liter and a 27 liter size and the 23 liter was best for me.
I have a Nikon D5500 and my longest lens is a 55-300. If I had a longer lens I would consider the 27 liter size.
I also wanted to have no hassles about being oversize when traveling internationally since I make frequent trips to Berlin. Some European airports and airlines are very picky about the size of carry-ons, and obviously I don''t want them to check my camera bag and lenses. With the 23 liter, I can re-arrange things for travel to squeeze it down to the size limits for the strictest airline, and then move things back when I arrive. During international flights this summer 2021, during lower volumes of travel from Covid, there has been plenty of room in overhead compartments so the airports/airlines have been more lax. But when travel volume returns I''ll also be ready. With the 27 liter you might have to negotiate with a strict airport/airline to let you carry it on since it is something that can not be checked due to the value and fragile nature of gear inside.

Like most photographers, I''ve owned a wide variety of backpacks and bags over the years, always searching for the perfect one. While perfection is elusive, this the the closest thing I''ve found in a backpack, and it''s currently my favorite bag. Of course, what works for me may not work for you, but here''s what makes this bag stand out for me:

-Quality construction. The pack is well built (as I''d expect from Tamrac) with thoughtful touches like corded zipper pulls and a sturdy grab handle on top.

-Comfortable to carry. The straps comfortably distribute weight across the shoulders, and the waist belt can be removed if (like me) you prefer to be without it. If you do like to use the waist strap, you''ll find this one is wide and well padded. I''d be comfortable wearing it on long hikes, but for day-to-day use I rarely want it so it''s nice to be able to leave the extra bulk behind.

-Thoughtful Tripod Carry System. If you carry a tripod regularly, you may be initially put off by the somewhat unusual configuration, but after getting used to it I''ve found it superior to anything else I''ve used. The large bottom pocket doubles as a foothold for the tripod, meaning your not going to want to carry small items in that pocket while you''re carrying a tripod. I haven''t found this to be a huge sacrifice. The advantage is that you have abundant space to anchor your tripod''s feet. It''s easy to fit two of the legs into the pocket to keep the tripod stable - none of the wobbling around you get when the tripod is hanging on by a single foot in one of those tiny tripod pockets that are typical. Then there are two straps that keep the tripod secured to the front of the bag, and a third strap at the top of the bag that holds the tripod head close to the pack. It''s the most secure system I''ve found on a backpack.

-Space. The "slim" designation in the name means the bag is only about 4 inches deep, so it''s not ideal if you''re carrying a gripped full frame body (though the bag isn''t rigid so you could make it fit). My Canon 5DSR fits comfortably with a bulky L-bracket attached, and there''s room inside for an assortment of lenses. I''ve currently got mine loaded with the 5DSR, a 70-200mm f2.8, 11-24mm f4, a Tamron 150-600mm, and a 50mm. The bag is tall enough to accommodate the 5DSR with the Tamron 150-600mm attached. There''s also room for a 15" laptop in the front compartment.

I do have a few minor issues with the bag. Since the it opens in the front, you''ll need to release the top tripod strap before opening it when you''re carrying a tripod. It also means you need to set the bag down on it''s back to open (on the side that you''ll later have against your body) which is less than ideal if you don''t have a clean place to put the bag down. The mesh padding on the back, which helps keeps you cool when you''re carrying it, tends to pick up sand like a sponge if you put the bag down at the beach. It cleans up easy enough, but it''s worth noting if you''re a regular beach-goer.

If you want a low-profile backpack, need to carry a pretty complete selection of lenses, and don''t need to carry a gripped body, this is one of the best choices out there.

The nice part is the chest strap to keep the shoulder straps from slipping off. The bad thing is the shoulder straps are too short for someone my size. Now the pack is too high to make use of the excellent waist straps. If you''re 6'' or so and lighter weight, this pack will likely fit very well. I add strap material to adjust for my size. However, at this cost point I would have thought the engineers would have made provision for that.

Bought this with the intent of retiring my Tamrac Expedition 8x, generally used to carry two pro bodies, a super tele plus a tele zoom to football games/soccer matches. This bag is well constructed and I appreciate the detachable waist belt which makes air travel easier. I also like the fact that is is all black versus the two tone sliver/black of the older bag. This bag is slightly smaller, but slightly deeper than my Expedition 8x, and though I can fit the same gear into the new bag with a little more creativity, I find I end up still using my old bag if I''m taking the 400mm to an event as it is just easier to use. I do like the new bag for all other gear combinations, though the plastic used for the interior compartment covers is much less forgiving than the plastic used for the interior compartments of the older Tamrac bag. The old bag has suffered years of me abusing it with no damage to the plastic. The new bag''s plastic has been destroyed after only a few months of use.

I bought this backpack to help balance and handle the weight on my back from my photo gear, as I go hiking in the woods a lot and like to photograph nature and wildlife. It easily holds a 400mm, f5.6 lens, my Nikon D7100, flash unit, and two smaller lenses, plus some extras like batteries, memory cards, several snacks like granola bars, and my binoculars too.
I haven''t attached my tripod to it yet but I''ve used the smaller front pocket to hold little things like a small notepad, pack of tissues, things like that.
I read that there was no holder for the water bottle so i bought the bottle carrier which works well but I wish it could sit slightly lower when attached to the side, would have rather just had one built into the pack. The bottle carrier holds my large bottle, around 3" dia, but I have a smaller bottle that I sometimes use and it actually fits into the one of the built in mesh pockets on the side just fine.
I really like the thick waist belt, it''s easy to tighten around your waist and easy to release, holds the weight of the pack well. I''ve found it to be overall pretty comfortable and I''ve walked/hiked for 3-6 hrs at a time with it so far.
I haven''t tried any of the other accessories; would like if it would have had a larger extra compartment built in but so far it holds everything I need with no problem. The foam dividers work well to keep things separated and helps holds my camera with lens and flash attached in place while I carry it.

Trust me, like a lot of photographers I have had a lot of camera bags. I’ve either broken them or outgrown them. This bag is compact enough to be carried on as hand luggage on a plane although fully loaded it would exceed the limit but I keep all breakables ( ie: lenses and camera) in it as carry on and anything else goes in the hold luggage. Let me tell you what I have in it, 2 pro dslrs. They are Canons. 4 lenses 18-55 kit, 75-300, 15-85, 10-22. An array of Nd Filters 2 sets of holders. A camera trigger and 2 intervalometers, 5 spare camera batteries, various AA batteries and cleaning cloths. A headlight, A small torch and a vixen Polarie star tracker ( about the same size as a small dslr) and a Giotto tripod. With everything in including my night photography stuff it weighs around 20kg but it wears lovely on your back and I trekked all over the canyons of Utah and Arizona with it and it was comfortable. It also has the advantage of being able to carry my 150-600mm lens on or off the camera with other lenses in the bag with a little bit of rearranging. Everything on it is double stitched, all of the zips are heavy duty. I know it’s a pricey bag, I never told my wife how much it was because she would have kittens!! But..... you will need a lot of equipment to outgrow this bag, it’s compact, very heavy duty, quite light and rigid to protect your gear you will not need to buy another camera bag again. Buy cheap and buy twice, or fork out for what is probably one of the best camera bags on the market just once.

I am a professional photographer and had used a series of not fit for purpose bags before shopping around for a good quality bag to carry kit for weddings/general shoots around town etc. I had tried this brand on in a camera shop but amazon beat the price considerably. The padding is pretty thick, and I love the support round the waist and chest - as once all my gear is loaded it really is very very heavy! Their are sufficient pockets to also carry things like tissues/keys, and a great set of clear pockets in the main compartment which I use for spare batteries, memory cards etc, which makes it super easy to find them on a shoot. The laptop sleeve fits my laptop comfortably and all in all I never have an issue of not being able to carry what I need in the bag. I dropped my bag out of the car onto gravel with all my kit and no discernable damage, that in itself makes it worth the money! The bag is to some extent heavy, but not problematic, even before you start but the benefits of the padding etc. really do make it worth carrying. I have been using this as my main bag as a full time freelancer, and even now (at 6months old) it barely looks like it''s come out the wrapping, even though I often put it down on muddy ground etc. It has massively improved shoots etc. by being able to carry what I need/want in an organised fashion! If you are looking at this and aren''t planning on carrying lenses as spare/spare batteries etc. and just want a little carry around for one camera, you might want to look for a smaller model, but for two cameras/variety of lenses and a ''handbag'' for personal items - it really does the job!

Over time I''ve gone through a number of bags / backpacks. Some have been designed for the purpose, others have been the right thing at the right time. My lens collection has grown over the years along with camera bodies to attach them to. My brief was to find a backpack that I could use all day without being too fatigued and ruining my back. Having purchased Tamrac products in the past, I''ve always been happy with the service they have returned. Tamrac I feel is not well enough know to the general public to command silly prices. Not really being available on the high street also means they are not sought after like the so called market leaders. The plus side of this is for those that know, you can obtain a quality item and not break the bank (or your back with the 27). The backpack itself is a quality affair. All the zips are well made; the design well thought out. In short, they is no need to harp about "this and that" of the backpack; just do yourself a favour and get one. You''ll not be disappointed. If I have one small negative, and this is not Tamrac''s fault. The bag is so configurable that you tend to carry more than you require. Even when half filled, the bag keeps its form and carries well. When filled to the brim, its heavy but extremely manageable. I expect this to last more than a few years of determined usage.

This is a huge bag, easily able to take a 500mm f4 plus extender plus pro DSLR with grip and a shedload of accessories and/or lenses, if your back can take the weight. The front pockets are close to useless, far too small for anything sensible but then if made bigger the main compartment would have to be reduced in order to fit the bag into airline carry-on specs. The removable belt, which is normally securely held in place by a large velcro pad, is a huge advantage, again helping to meet airline specs. The bag weighs only 2.2 Kg, compared to the 5 Kg of a typical competitor, such as a Think Tank roller bag. The lower weight seems to have been achieved by reducing the rigidity the bag; the outer skins feels flexible, not at all rigid and , in some senses "cheap", thereby raising questions about the security of the contents. The internal frame is, however, suitably rigid so that when properly configured, contents should be adequatley protected. Whether this is a good bag for you will depend on how you assess the trade off between rigidityand weight. For me, it works.

I absolutely love it! First and most importantly it fits all of my gear comfortably, and there''s a lot more space for anything else you might want to take with you. I like that the laptop compartment is in front of the backpack, it''s easily accessible, and it fits 15" laptops with no problem, as well as any other tablet or books you might need. Butterfly pockets are little smaller than I would like, but you can fit enough memory cards or batteries inside if you don''t mind the bulge. Inside I easily fitted two professional camera bodies, five lenses with lens hoods, three flashes, various triggers, chargers for camera batteries as well as flash batteries, telephoto extender, and there is still room for more! Inside pockets are transparent, unlike traditional mesh pockets in some of the other bags I used. It''s a simple change but it''s quite useful and the plastic doesn''t feel cheap, however it remains to be seen how it will look after some usage. The outside of the backpack looks and feels very high quality, it''s sturdy and well put together. Upper carrying handle is probably the best I''ve seen in any backpack so far, which seems like an irrelevant thing but when you''ve had couple of those break on other bags you''ll come to appreciate it! The back of the backpack is very well designed to support your lower back, even without the detachable belt that comes with it. It''s a good thing because I will probably use the backpack without the belt for my day to day work. That being said, it''s a big backpack, so choose your size carefully, if you don''t need two camera bodies and bunch of lenses and other stuff the 27 might be too big for you. All in all, I am VERY happy with this backpack, and I can see myself using it for quite some time.
