Granted that even the original 1967 vinyl release was poorly engineered, this "remaster" does the album no favors. The voices, in particular, have retreated into the far distance and any semblance of vocal presence has been completely lost. Even if the original did sound like it was being played on a tinny radio in the corner of the room, this 2003 version sounds like it''s being played on a tinny radio somewhere down the hall. If you''re interested in this album on cd, you''d do well to search hard for a used copy of the original 1989 CD release. It''s of significantly better quality.

I purchased the vinyl of this CD when it first came out. I was overseas in the military at the time. Jefferson Airplane was a rising star group that had won critical acclaim with their album Surrealistic Pillow. Grace Slick had established herself as a virtual icon which proved itself true over the years. This was a totally "different" album from the normal "rock" at the time. A departure far from the norm. Over the years I had collected quite a number of vinyl albums as they were released. My collection grew. When CD''s came into their own in the 80''s, I began to "replace" my vinyl with CD''s. My daughter has all my original vinyl. I remembered this album as one of the ones that eventually I would find and enjoy again. I am not disappointed as it still rings true in my heart. Airplane evolved into Starship. I evolved from vinyl to CD. This is an outstanding album of true brilliance and a band''s ability to evolve with the radical times that were "a - changin'' " If you like the Airplane ... this album is a must.

Never was the cliche "it grows on you" more applicable than this masterpiece. It''d be easy to say that "Volunteers" is a better album, but also irrelevant. Baxter''s (despite being the same band) occupies a completely different reality than Volunteers. The famous "non commercial" aspect of Baxter''s may not impress upon first listen, but the innate greatness of it really grows on you, swiftly assuming absolute magnificence. When I play Volunteers, I program the CD, skipping a few songs, but Baxter''s should be played all the way through...it can be trusted as a shining whole. This is not, of course, to denigrate Volunteers whatsoever, because Volunteers is truly magnificent in a different way, more overtly revolutionary, I guess.
Volunteers makes you stand up & ecstatically salute; while Baxter''s is something one hovers in, serenely...

including a big dose of experimentation by both Grace Slick and Jorma Kaukonen/Jack Cassady, and "Won''t You Try/Saturday Afternoon" is for me the best song they ever did, just an amazing accomplishment and document. The only bad thing on the album is one loose moment of laughter and the stupid joke that comes after someone says, "No man is an island." Never fails to make me cringe. Oh well. Great album.

Just a few quick words because if you''ve come to this page you know the music and are just curious about the remastered version. Well, in my ear''s opinion, it''s like hearing the LP for the first time again (minus a few mental alterations). The sonic clarity is wonderful. Jack Cassady''s bass playing has always been under appreciated so it''s great to be able to hear every bass note clearly. Every member''s contribution has impressive clarity. I was never fond of Jorma''s guitar sound,NOT his playing which is great, just the rather thin sound. I guess not even a re-mix could change that. It is, no doubt, just a result of the technology''s limits of the day. Truth be told, however, that guitar sound was really a signature of Jefferson Airplane. You knew it was them the instant you heard the guitar come in (assuming it came before the unmistakeable vocals).
So, what I mean to say is that the remaster is definitely worth it. The bonus tracks are fun but not the reason to buy the re-issue. The reason to buy it is the sonic punch it now has.
Even better, and for the same reason is "Crown of Creation'' which still sounds timeless because of both the original stellar production and the maturity of the song craft. For they could never top it. And once they started Grunt and added Papa John''s fiddle it was like waving a white flag. The music began to sound like contractually obligated shambles.
If you are looking to rediscover Jefferson Airplane and especially if you are already quite familiar with the music, I think the remasters of "After the Bathing at Baxter''s" & "Crown of Creation" will but a wide smile on your face as it did for me. I hope this helps you decide.

if I had a dime for each playing of this I''d .... To me JA is so unique, their sound unlike anyone else and showcased here like never before. I like travel with CD and so when I was at a museum in tampa where marty balin was speaking, I dashed out to the car and now have his autograph on it. I regretted that his own contributions to and thoughts about this album weren''t perhaps as thrilling to him as to me but he was most gracious. By way of trying to justify imposing on him I mentioned I had seen JA in 1967 when I was in 8th grade in a venue that looked like a 1950''s version of a flying saucer hoping that might ring a bell. Not for everyone certainly, with some songs that might have been on SurrPill but dominated by innovative sounds and studio work. Would it have been the same if recorded in SanFran...?
